TLC is ramping up its comedy entertainment programming with an Ed Gamble-fronted panel series order and a renewal of its revamped Mock the Week.
The Traitors: Uncloaked helmer Gamble will be joined by fellow comics and team captains Richard Ayoade and Joanne McNally in Ranga Bee-produced Unacceptable.
The six-part series sees the trio joined by guest comedians who give their daft, unique, potentially unwise or unacceptable opinions, which their team must then defend.
Using a live ‘swingometer’ to track how many audience members they convince with their wit and persuasive punchlines, the teams will aim to outdo the other and win the full backing of the studio crowd.
The 6 x 60-minute series will air this summer and is exec produced by Ranga Bee’s co-founders Romesh Ranganathan and Benjamin Green.
Warner Bros Discovery-owned TLC has also ordered an 11-part second series of Angst Productions’ classic comedy panel show Mock the Week, following the launch of the rebooted series.
Fronted by Dara Ó Briain, the format will again include some of the nation’s favourite comedians, including series regular Rhys James and fresh and returning comic talent. WBD said the reboot has posted strong ratings which top 1m each week after repeats.
The orders come following TLC’s relaunch as a free-to-air channel in January and were commissioned by Graham Lafferty, senior vice-president of content strategy & networks, for UK & Ireland at WBD. Speaking exclusively to Broadcast when announcing TLC’s revamp, Lafferty promised further commissions in the comedy and entertainment space, which is driving the tone of the channel’s programming.
Lafferty ordered the series, which were commissioned for WBD UK&I by Charlotte Reid.
Lafferty said: “We’ve added some really exciting new programmes to TLC as part of the move to free-to-air – particularly through local comedy formats with Mock the Week and the upcoming Zero Stars series with Roisin Conaty and Sara Pascoe.
“We are delighted to build further on this with Unacceptable, working with Ranga Bee.”
Ranganathan and Greens aid: “Unacceptable is a new format that allows comics to debate the sort of opinions they normally only discuss backstage. With Ed helming and Richard and Joanne leading the teams, it’s going to be an incredibly sharp and funny series.
“We realised that as comedians rarely admit they’re wrong, the only option was to create a show that lets the people decide.”
Gamble added he is “absolutely buzzing” to be hosting the show.
He added: “It’s always been my dream to see some of the biggest comedy legends around expose and justify opinions that really should’ve stayed in the group chat.”
